Most people compare storage units by price. That makes sense — but the cheapest option often turns out to be the most expensive one once you have to move your belongings elsewhere three months later.

1. What "security" actually means

Everyone uses the word, but it does not mean the same thing everywhere. Ask specifically:

  • Are there cameras, and do they run 24 hours a day?
  • Is there a connected alarm system?
  • Is there fire detection?
  • Who holds a key to your unit?

The right answer to that last question is: only you.

2. When you can actually get in

"24/7 access" sounds appealing, but ask yourself how often you will really need to visit your unit at three in the morning. It is more useful to know whether you can book a visit easily, and how quickly you get a response when you call.

Our visits are by appointment. Security monitoring runs around the clock.

3. The contract terms

Two questions that make a real difference:

  • Is there a minimum commitment? If so, what happens if you need to stop earlier?
  • Can you change sizes? Needs change, so it helps to be able to move to a bigger or smaller unit without a penalty.

4. The real distance

A unit that is 10 minutes further away seems like a trivial difference when you sign. It stops feeling trivial the fourth time you drive through traffic to grab one box.

Think realistically about how often you will actually go, and measure the distance from wherever you really start from — home or work.

5. What is not included in the price

Ask for the total cost in writing. Common extra charges worth clarifying up front: contract activation fees, mandatory insurance, lock charges, or a price increase after the first few months.

A good sign of trustworthiness: prices are published on the website, and you do not have to request a quote just to get a number.

One last thing

Visit the space before you sign. Photos on a website will not tell you whether there is damp, whether the space is clean, or whether a truck can actually get access. A ten-minute visit answers questions no website ever can.
