The wrong storage unit size costs you in one of two ways: either you pay for space that sits empty, or you discover on moving day that your things do not fit. Both are easy to avoid.
Start with volume, not square meters
Most people think in square meters, because that is how we measure homes. In storage, though, what matters is cubic capacity: you can stack boxes up to the ceiling, something you would never do in your living room.
A 5 sqm unit with a 2-meter ceiling gives you 10 cubic meters of usable space — enough to fit far more than you would expect, if you pack it well.
Practical size comparisons
The comparisons below come from moves we have actually handled, and they are deliberately conservative — we would rather your things fit comfortably than just barely.
- A few boxes, seasonal items, sports gear: a loft (from €25 a month) or a 2-3 sqm unit.
- Studio flat: a 5-6 sqm unit.
- One-bedroom apartment: a 9 sqm unit.
- Two-bedroom flat with a full household: a 12 sqm unit.
- Three-bedroom flat, a large household, or merchandise: a 15 sqm unit or larger.
Three things that change the calculation
1. Bulky items
A three-seat sofa, a refrigerator, or a piano cannot be stacked. If you have three or more items like these, go up a size.
2. How often you will need access
If you plan to take things out every few weeks, you need a walkway inside the unit. That "costs" roughly 20% of the space. If it is long-term storage with no access needed, you can fill the space completely.
3. How well you pack
Uniform boxes of the same size stack neatly and make full use of the height. Odd-shaped bags and open boxes can easily waste a third of the space.
If you are torn between two sizes, choose the bigger one. The difference in monthly cost is smaller than the cost and hassle of renting a second unit later.
